Information about Peanuts

Peanuts, also known as groundnuts, are a legume crop known for their nutrient density and versatility in various culinary applications. They are technically legumes, not nuts, and belong to the Fabaceae family. Peanuts can be consumed raw, roasted, or used as ingredients in peanut butter, cooking oils, and sauces. They are particularly popular in snacks and as a staple in many cuisines worldwide.

Cultivation & Harvesting

In India, peanuts for bird feed are mainly cultivated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Key varieties include Runner/Bold and Spanish/Java, influenced by weather, soil, and farming techniques.

Initial Sorting & Cleaning

Peanuts are sorted to eliminate dirt and contaminants using specialized machinery. Only high-quality peanuts, sized 60/70, 80/100, or split, are selected to avoid health risks for birds like choking hazards.

Processing

Peanuts are blanched, roasted, or crushed to enhance flavor, nutritional value, and shelf life. Roasting and crushing make them easier to consume and digest for birds, especially smaller species.

Quality Control & Grading

Peanuts undergo stringent aflatoxin testing to meet safety standards. Quality control ensures peanuts are free of harmful contaminants, ensuring a safe and healthy product for bird feed.

Packaging & Distribution

Peanuts are packaged in various forms, including bulk sacks (1-1.25 tons) and 25 kg vacuum packs. Distribution channels ensure the product reaches retailers, catering to garden and wild bird keepers.

Price Comparison
Bird Feed vs. Human-grade Peanuts

Bird feed peanuts are generally more affordable than human-grade peanuts, yet prices are linked. A drop in human-grade prices often lowers bird feed costs due to factors like supply and yield. Human-grade peanuts have stricter aflatoxin limits (Aflatoxin B1: 2 ppb, Total: 4 ppb), while bird feed peanuts must meet a less stringent EU total aflatoxin standard of under 20 ppb, stressing the need for safety testing.
